CROW AGENCY, MT – Participants in the Many Stars Coal-to-Liquids Project are pleased to announce the Bureau of Indian Affairs has formally approved the contract between the Crow Nation and Australian-American Energy Co. LLC (AAEC).
The BIA, which is tasked under federal law with reviewing such contracts, notified the Crow Nation in a letter last week that it had examined the extensive agreement in its entirety and given approval to move forward.
Allan Blood, Chairman of AAEC, said the approval is an important step in the project’s development.
“Getting the BIA’s signoff of the Many Stars Project Agreement is a significant accomplishment. It means the agreement meets all the legal requirements and allows the Project Team to continue moving forward with this important project,” Blood said.
Announced in August 2008, Many Stars CTL is an energy development project led by AAEC in collaboration with the Crow Nation. Expected to be operational in 2016, the project will use tribal coal resources to produce 50,000 barrels per day of alternative, clean-burning fuels for domestic use.
Many Stars has committed to capturing the CO2 produced during the coal gasification process and intends to produce its own power needs using waste heat gas and gases at the plant, which will further reduce the project’s overall CO2 footprint that would otherwise be created by buying power from the grid.
Blood noted that while the contract approval from the BIA is a significant milestone, it is not an approval for construction to begin.
“We still have a lot of work ahead of us to plan, engineer and permit the project and gain all of the other approvals needed,” Blood said.
